About Us

We’re not just another milk brand. We’re your neighbors and friends. We’re California dairy, nestled in Sonoma County, or as we call it, Milk Country. For over 100 years, we’ve brought the cleanest, tastiest, and most conscious dairy from our local family farms to your table. We are probably your great grandma’s milk and proud to be yours. Explore the journey of our dairy.

Our Story

It all started in 1916 when the Petaluma Cooperative Creamery, a small creamery in our hometown, began bottling and distributing fresh, delicious milk. Today, we’re proud to call Sonoma County home, providing the best California dairy possible in good ways for our family farms, community, and planet.

1916

The Petaluma Cooperative Creamery begins distributing Clover-branded dairy products in the Petaluma, CA area. Soon thereafter, Clover products began showing up all over Northern California.

1969

Clo the Cow first appears as the official mascot for the Clover Brand. She has since grazed billboards in Northern California with the dairy best puns the state has ever seen.

1977

Gene Benedetti and five partners acquire the wholesale distribution business from California Cooperative Creamery (formerly known as Petaluma Cooperative Creamery) and Stornetta’s Dairy in Sonoma, CA in 1977. As a result of this acquisition, Clover Stornetta Farms, Inc. is born.

1991

Clover Stornetta opens its new state-of-the-art milk processing facility at the Petaluma location. With a new fully automated facility, Clover is able to do three times the volume of the old plant with virtually the same manpower.

1994

Clover rejects Monsanto’s newly developed “wonder” drug: rBST—a controversial synthetic growth hormone designed to artificially stimulate milk production in dairy cows. Clover pledges to avoid all use of rBST and goes on to develop and adopt rigorous quality standards set by the North Coast Excellence Certified program. Clover leads the way in practicing sustainable agriculture and humane treatment of cows—still adhered to today.

1999

Clover becomes early adopters of the organic movement and adds dedicated products to the lineup.

2000

Clover Stornetta Farms becomes the first dairy in the U.S. to be certified by the American Humane Association for its animal welfare program.

2016

Clover becomes B-Corp Certified—passing with an impressively high score. We remain B-Corp Certified today.

2017

Clover Stornetta Farms officially rebrands as “Clover Sonoma”, embracing the region it calls home. The brand evolves the North Coast Excellence Program into the Clover Promise of Excellence.

2021

Clover Sonoma partners with independent, Colombian-based dairy, food and nutrition company, Alpina, to facilitate growth in the U.S. Market.
