Farming Silage
Starting in 1972, George Mertens began farming corn silage. Today, it is still something they proudly work on with their many grandchildren to continue the family tradition. By producing a large volume of silage, they are able to preserve forage year-round to feed their own cows along with others from local dairies. The Mertens family begins the silage process by cutting the fields, loading the material into transfer trucks, and unloading it into a bagging system for storage on the farm, where fermentation starts in the absence of oxygen.
