How to Make Homemade Sour Cream

Equipment: 1-pint jar with lid; small bowl; wooden spoon; measuring cup for liquids


  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon white vinegar
  1. Mix the milk and vinegar in the bowl and let it stand for 10 minutes.
  2. Pour the cream into the jar, then add the milk mixture and stir.
  3. Place the lid on the jar.
  4. Let it stand for 24 hours unrefrigerated.
  5. Place the jar in your refrigerator.

Caution: This will only last about a week.

Clover Walnut Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Nuts (optional) are part of the topping and filling. Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes to about an hour. Serves 6

Equipment: 1 medium Bundt pan lightly buttered; medium mixing bowl; 2 small mixing bowls; wooden spoon

Cake Batter Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 eggs or 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Filling/Topping Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp. organic Clover butter
  1. Combine topping/filling ingredients, except butter, in small bowl and set aside.
  2. Mix dry batter ingredients in medium bowl.
  3. In second small bowl, beat eggs and fold in oil and sour cream until smooth.
  4. Blend wet ingredients into dry batter ingredients.
  5. Pour half the batter into pan and cover with half the topping/filling.
  6. Cover with remaining batter, then top with nut mixture.
  7. Melt Tbsp. of butter and drizzle over topping before baking.
